The International Committee of the Attosecond Science and Technology Conference is pleased to announce that the 7th International Conference (ATTO2019) will take place in Szeged, Hungary from July 1 to 5 2019.

ATTO2019 will cover all aspects of attosecond science and technologies from sources and metrology to applications. The main research topics to be discussed include:

• (2) High-order harmonic generation and applications

• (3) Ultrafast phenomena on the attosecond and femtosecond timescales

• (4) Next generation drivers for attosecond pulse and high-order harmonic generation

We present experimental and theoretical investigations on photoionization of chiral molecules by counter-rotating bicircular bichromatic lasers. Forward/backward asymmetries in the photoelectron momentum distributions reveal the influence of chirality on sub-cycle interferences and angular streaking.

09:30 Background-Free Electric Dipole based Chiral-HHG by Symmetry Breaking Spectroscopy: Theory and Experiment

We propose and demonstrate experimentally an ultrafast chirality spectroscopy technique based on non-collinear harmonic generation, which relies only on electric-dipole interactions. The scheme is based on symmetry breaking, i.e. the chiral signal resides in harmonics that are forbidden when the medium is achiral/racemic, leading to a background-free signal. Moreover, by controlling the pump’s symmetry properties the technique also yields a huge enantio-sensitive response – we experimentally measure 163% R/S selectivity.

09:45 Locally and Globally Chiral Fields for Ultimate Control of Chiral Light Matter Interaction

We introduce locally and globally chiral fields and demonstrate the highest possible degree of control over nonlinear chiroptical response, fully suppressing high harmonic emission in a desired enantiomer while enhancing it in its mirror twin.

10:00 Controlling Sub-cycle Instantaneous Optical Chirality in the Photoionization of Chiral Molecules

Our study shows a sub cycle chiral response between a light pulse with zero total chirality, and a chiral molecule. We engineer an electric field whose instantaneous chirality changes sign every half cycle, and observe an instantaneous chiral response. The response can be controlled by changing the temporal behavior of the pulse, on a sub cycle resolution. We show qualitative agreement between experiment and theory.

We show that time-/energy-resolved anisotropy parameters of photoelectron angular distributions provide a clear mapping of both the ultrafast natural dynamics at the conical intersection of NO$_2$ and its modifications induced by an ultrashort control pulse.

11:30 Generalized Phase Sensitivity of Molecular Bond Breaking

We investigated the relation between the intrinsic and CEP-induced asymmetries in laser-induced bond-breaking of H$_{2}$. We show that the intrinsic asymmetry is modulated by the CEP via the variation of the field-strength at the ionization-time.

We reveal an unexpected facet of bond softening in H$_2$, namely a strikingly structured angular distribution of emitted protons. The angular modulations arise from rich dynamics in a light-induced potential landscape, which we track experimentally.

Using multi-body coincidence measurements, we studied laser-induced dissociative recombination of CO$_{2}$ after strong field double ionization. We observed the localization of the recombined Rydberg electron dominantly on O$^{+}$ rather than CO$^{+}$.

We present the results of the first attoclock experiment using atomic hydrogen wherein the tunnelling delays under strong-field ionisation were probed with a reaction microscope and 770 nm circularly polarised ($\epsilon=0.84$) few cycle laser pulses in the intensity range of 1.65 to $3.9 \times 10^{14}$ W/cm$^2$.

15:00 Molecular Orbital Imprint in Laser-driven Electron Recollision

One of the commonly used assumptions underlying the analysis of attosecond strong-field spectroscopies is that in the propagation step any information on the initial state of the ionized electron is lost. For example, it is commonly assumed that any information on the orbital from which the electron originates is "washed out" during the propagation step, and no longer influences the recollision process. Here we have tested this central assumption experimentally and theoretically by studying molecular-frame elastic laser-induced electron rescattering associated with two different ionization continua in the same polyatomic molecule.

16:15 Capturing the Fastest Dynamics in Materials using High Harmonic Sources

In recent work, we captured intrinsic sub-femtosecond electron-electron scattering dynamics in materials for the first time. A powerful new technique called atto-ARPES (i.e. attosecond angle-resolved photoemission) enables deep-sub-fs measurements with sufficient energy resolution to separate different bands and states. This is the first way to directly probe the contribution of electron scattering and screening to low-energy excitations near the Fermi level.

It is demonstrated by numerical simulations that attosecond chirp in the 300 to 1000 eV range can be partially compensated by the negative dispersion of ionized or unionized molecular hydrogen gas to achieve 25-as duration.

1.9-fs deep ultraviolet pulses (150 nJ) are obtained from third-harmonic generation in argon using a laser micromachined gas cell. The source is synchronized with isolated attosecond XUV pulses offering new avenues in attosecond spectroscopy of bio-relevant molecules.

18:00 A Quantum Concept of Attosecond Radiation

It has been shown that symmetric entangled coherent states of a many-mode optical radiation always result in completely locked Fourier superpositions for the expectation value of the electric field operator. Accordingly, in case of such entangled states, even an occasionally random distribution of the phases of the complex amplitudes cannot spoil the locking of the temporal Fourier components. This is in contrast to the case of simple product multimode coherent states, where the possible randomness of the mutual phases should result in a random temporal evolution of the radiation field. When our present formal result on the symmetric entangled states is applied for a sequence of high harmonics, the appearance of attosecond pulse trains can immediately be derived in the frame of the quantum optical description of the radiation field, in accord with various experiments. However, the question still remains whether truly these entangled states are generated in the high-harmonic production processes.

18:00 Above Threshold Ionization Features Driven by Few Cycles Bounded Inhomogeneous Electric Field

This works describes in detail the main photoelectron spectra features after excitation with several driven wavelengths under inhomegenous field conditions. Quantum and classical simulations are in good agreement showing an important cut-off enlargement and high photoelectrons yield.

18:00 Alpha Decay in Intense Laser Fields

We calculate the effect of intense laser fields on nuclear alpha decay process, using realistic and quantitative nuclear potentials. We show that alpha decay rates can indeed be modified by strong laser fields to some finite extent. We also predict that alpha decays with lower decay energies are relatively easier to be modified than those with higher decay energies, due to longer tunneling paths for the laser field to act on. Furthermore, we predict that modifications to angle-resolved penetrability are easier to achieve than modifications to angle-integrated penetrability.

Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we investigate laser-induced attosecond electron dynamics in III-V semiconductors. We find a complex interplay between intra- and inter-band transitions in the transient response. Our findings are supported by ab-initio calculations.

18:00 Attosecond Photoelectron Holography in Strong Field Tunneling Ionization

Tunneling ionization of atoms or molecules by a strong laser field generates an electron wavepacket. This electron wavepacket could reach the detector directly or undergoes rescattering by the parent ion, giving rising to the interference in the photoelectron momentum distribution (PEMD), referred as photoelectron holography in strong field tunneling ionization. We will first show how the structure information was encoded in the hologram and proposed a procedure to extract the important structure information, the phase of the elastic scattering amplitude. Then, we will reveal how the information of valence electron motion is encoded in the hologram of the PEMD.

We used fused silica thin plates to broaden the spectrum of femtosecond pulses. After careful group delay compensation, the 10 fs, 800 nm pulse was focused on Ar, and a train of 308 as pulses was detected.

18:00 Autoionizing Rydberg States of H$_2$ Molecules in Strong Laser Field

Channel resolved electron emission from strong-field photoionization of H$_{2}$ molecules were measured using ultrashort laser pulses and a reaction microscope. An enhancement of the photoelectron yield in the low-energy region was observed for the case of bound ionization. This enhancement is understood as the population of autoionizing Rydberg states in the neutral molecule and subsequent transfer of energy from the vibrational motion to the electron.

18:00 Broadband Terahertz Generation in Organic Crystals by Optical Rectification of Intense Mid-Infrared Pulses

We demonstrate broadband THz generation in organic crystals driven by mid-IR $3.9\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ pulses. Due to the suppression of multi-photon absorption, we record an order of magnitude increase in the damage and optical to THz conversion saturation thresholds as compared to conventional near-IR pump schemes.

18:00 Carrier-envelope-phase Stabilized KLM Yb:CYA Laser with Feed-forward Scheme

We report a carrier-envelope phase stabilized kerr-lens mode locking (KLM) Yb:CYA laser with feed-forward methods. Signal-to-noise (SNR) of the out-of-loop carrier-envelope-offset (CEO) was measured to be 38 dB. Timing jitter of the stabilized CEO was 44 as.

18:00 Characterisation and Modelling of Ultrashort Laser-Driven Electromagnetic Pulses

We will demonstrate based on experimental results a direct correlation between measured EMP energy and the laser parameters such as laser energy and intensity. 18:00 Coherence Transfer from Ultrastable Optical Frequency Comb to CW Laser with Feed-forward Method

We report a precision feed-forward locking between a 1064 nm continuous wave (CW) and an ultrastable optical frequency comb. The relative linewidth of the 1064 nm CW laser is narrowed to 1.14 mHz and the stability reaches 1.5×10$^{-17}$ at 1 s at the optical wavelength of 1064 nm.

18:00 Direct Numerical Observation of Real-Space Recollision in High-Harmonic Generation from Solids

Real-space picture of electron recollision with the parent ion guides our understanding of the highly nonlinear response of atoms and molecules to intense low-frequency laser fields. It is also among several leading contestants for the dominant mechanism of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, where it is typically viewed in the momentum space, as the recombination of the conduction band electron with the valence band hole, competing with another HHG mechanism, the strong-field driven Bloch oscillations. In this work, we use numerical simulations to directly test and confirm the real-space recollision picture as the key mechanism of HHG in solids. Our tests take advantage of the well-known characteristic features in the molecular harmonic spectra, associated with the real-space structure of the molecular ion. We show the emergence of analogous spectral features when similar real-space structures are present in the periodic potential of the solid-state lattice as shown in the figure. This work demonstrates the capability of HHG imaging of spatial structures of a unit cell in solids.

18:00 High Repetition-rate, Two-cycle Driver for High-flux HHG

We demonstrate a hybrid dual-stage nonlinear compression scheme allowing to compress 330 fs-pulses generated from a high-energy ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier down to 6.8 fs pulse duration, with an overall transmission of 61%. This high transmission is obtained by using a first compression stage based on a gas-filled multipass cell, and a second stage based on a large-core gas-filled capillary. The source output is fully characterized in terms of spectral, temporal, spatial, and short- and long-term stability properties. The system’s compactness, stability, and high average power makes it ideally suited to drive high photon flux XUV sources through high harmonic generation.

Micro-bunching instability (MBI) is considered as a critical obstacle for the realization of the isolated terawatt attosecond XFEL. To make high a peak current, the distribution of the electron beam in the phase space should be uniform. The micro-bunching instability will twist the distribution which results in very low peak current value. The effect by MBI has been investigated and a proposal is provided to overcome the obstacle. 18:00 Laser Induced Distortion of Band Structure in Solids: an Analytic Model in Three Dimensions

We consider a spatially periodic (cosine) potential as a model for a crystalline solid that interacts with a harmonically oscillating external electric field. This problem is periodic both in space and time and can be solved analytically using the Kramers-Henneberger co-moving frame. By analyzing the stability of the closely related Mathieu-type differential equation, the electronic band structure can be obtained. In our former study (for one spatial dimension) we successfully demonstrated that by changing the field intensity, the width of the zero-field band gaps can be drastically modified, including the special case when the external field caused the band gaps to disappear.

18:00 Longitudinal Momentum of the Electron at the Tunnelling Exit

The longitudinal tunnelling-exit momentum of the electron in strong-field tunnelling ionization is shown to be nonzero even in the static or the adiabatic limit. This nonzero momentum is a purely quantum mechanical effect determined by the shape of the wave function in the vicinity of the tunnelling-exit point. Nonadiabaticity or finite wavelength may increase this momentum substantially, and the detailed value depends on both the atomic and the laser parameters.

18:00 Michelson Interferometry of High-order Harmonic Generation in Solids

High-order harmonic generation in solids has attracted intensive investigations and many different features have been identified and interpreted. In this Letter, we find a distinct and clean interference pattern in the high-energy end of the spectrum by varying the maximum value of the vector potential of a driving pulse. This pattern can only be observed when the quasi-electron of the solid can be driven to the boundary of the Brillouin zone. Our results are based on the exact numerical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the quasi-electron in solids and can be analytically interpreted with a model based on the principle of the Michelson interferometer. Our finding may find potential applications in imaging of the dispersion relation or topological structure of the energy bands in solids.

18:00 Momentum Spectroscopy of Cold Rubidium in the Femtosecond Laser Field

We study photoionization of cold rubidium atoms in a strong infrared femtosecond laser field using a magneto-optical trap (MOT) recoil ion momentum spectrometer. The momentum distributions of Rb$^+$ created by absorption of two- or three-photon illuminate a dipole-like double-peak structure. The yielding momentum resolution of $0.12\pm0.03$ a.u. is achieved in comparison with calculations, exhibiting the great prospects for the study of electron correlations in alkali metal atoms through interaction with strong laser pulses.

18:00 Multichannel-resolved Dynamics in Below-threshold Harmonic Generation of Diatomic Molecules

We present an ab initio quantum study of below-threshold harmonic generation (BTHG) from H$_2^+$ molecules in the presence of an intense laser field by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation accurately in space and time. We find that multiple channels contribute to BTHG of H$_2^+$ molecules, which are related to the electron driven initially at specific time of the laser pulse from one nuclear core to another nuclear core or back to the parent core itself. The distinct contributions of these channels are distinguished by using a novel synchrosqueezing time-frequency analysis. An intuitive physical picture discovered reveals electron dynamics in molecular BTHG in details for the first time.

18:00 Revelation of Properties of the Plasmonic Field Using Bichromatic Circularly Polarized Laser Fields

Plasmonically enhanced field exhibits a great potential to extend the energy-cutoff of the high-order harmonic generation (HHG). In addition, in recent years, circularly polarized harmonics were generated using bichromatic circularly polarized laser fields. In this work, we combine the two approaches and study the HHG process driven by plasmonically enhanced bichromatic circularly polarized laser fields. We show that not only the harmonic energy-cutoff is increased, but also that the polarization of emitted harmonics becomes energy dependent. This dependence is determined by the direction and the strength of the applied plasmonic field.

We propose a method for single-shot imaging of electron band structure. The electron band structure is encoded in the carry-envelope-phase (CEP) dependent frequency-shift of high harmonic radiation generated by a few-cycle laser field. By analyzing the quantum trajectories, the relation between electron band structure and frequency of the emitted radiation is established with a temporal two-slit interference. Based on this time-domain interferometry, the electron band structure can be retrieved from high harmonics with a few-cycle laser field in a given CEP. Our single-shot measurement paves the way to imaging the ultrafast transient modification to band structure.

We use the two-color (400 nm + 800 nm) co-rotating circularly polarized laser fields to ionize argon atoms. In this double-hand attoclock, we introduce a spatially rotating temporal Young’s two-slit interferometer with the variable slit width, in which the oppositely modulated wave packets originating from consecutive laser cycles are dynamically prepared and interfered. Developing a Fourier-transform algorithm on energy-resolved photoelectron interferograms, we can directly extract the amplitude and the phase of emitting electron wave packets from strong-field ionization.

We demonstrate a highly efficient, single-stage, SRS-enabled cascaded frequency down-conversion to generate high-energy, few-cycle, IR pulses. 10 mJ, 220 fs pulses at 1030 nm are red-shifted to 1230 nm in a 5.5 m-long, nitrogen-filled waveguide with 82.5% efficiency, and subsequently compressed down to 19 fs.

11:45 Broadband Intense THz Fields from Mid-IR Laser-Driven Plasma

We report on intense THz generation in two-color laser filaments driven by $3.9\ \mathrm{\mu m}$ pulses. The resulting extraordinary conversion efficiency of 2.34% is more than one order of magnitude higher as compared to conventional NIR drivers. The generated THz pulse energy of 0.185-mJ is sufficient for nonlinear perturbation of electro-optical crystals.

12:00 Multi-XUV-photon Multiple Ionization by 20 GW High-harmonic Pulses

Here, we demonstrate a lab scale high-harmonic-generation source, installed and operating at the attosecond science & technology lab of FORTH-IESL delivering pulse energies of ~230 μJ and ~130 μJ in the ~50 nm spectral range from Xenon and Argon, respectively, in a quasi phase-matched dual gas-jet configuration. XUV pulses of this source have been used to observe multiple ionization of Argon atoms up to Ar$^{4+}$.

10:45 Attosecond Science: From Basic Research to Cancer Detection

Born around the turn of the new millennium, attosecond metrology has provided real-time insight into atomic-scale electron motions and light field oscillation, previously inaccessible to human observation. Until recently, this capability has relied on attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses, generated and measured in complex vacuum systems. Next-generation attosecond metrology is now about to change this state of matters profoundly. Sub-femtosecond current injection into wide-gap materials can directly probe ultrafast electron phenomena in condensed matter systems and can also be used for sampling the electric field of light up to ultraviolet frequencies. Petahertz field sampling draws on a robust solid-state circuitry and routine few-cycle laser technology, opening the door for complete characterization of electromagnetic fields all the way from the far infrared to the vacuum ultraviolet. These fields, with accurately measured temporal evolution, serve as a unique probe for the polarization response of matter. Field-resolved spectroscopy will access valence electronic as well as nuclear motions in all forms of matter and constitutes a generalization of pump-probe approaches. Its implementation with a solid-state instrumentation opens the door for real-world applications, such as early cancer detection by measuring miniscule changes of the molecular composition of blood via field-resolved vibrational molecular fingerprinting.

We theoretically study the photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) of H$_2^+$ in elliptically polarized laser fields. Depending on the internuclear distance of H$_2^+$ by numerically solving the time-dependent Schördinger equation (TDSE), the PMDs reveal different asymmetries with respect to the major and minor axes of the laser ellipse.

18:00 Ellipticity-Resolved High-Harmonic Spectroscopy of Phase-Locked Attosecond Pulse Trains

We develop and explore, theoretically and experimentally, a high harmonic spectroscopy technique for the interlocking of attosecond pulse trains (APTs). We produce a pair of intertwined APTs by driving HHG with cross-linear $\omega$-2$\omega$ fields and then modify their properties by introducing slight ellipticities to the drivers. Most importantly, we developed an analytic formula that maps very well the properties of the APT pair to the ellipticities of the high harmonics (which vary from linear to nearly circular). We utilize this mapping for recovering APTs properties (attosecond relative delay, relative polarization angle and APT ellipticities) by measuring the ellipticities of the high harmonics vs. the pump ellipticity.

18:00 High Order Harmonic Generation in an Active Grating

High order harmonic generation (HHG) driven by a combination of two or more femtosecond laser fields has lately been thoroughly investigated for its capability to impart specific properties to the outgoing XUV spectrum. Although HHG is a strong field process, the observations were mainly interpreted in terms of photon conservation. Here, we will present a complementary approach based on the analysis of the spatio-temporal structure of the composite driving field at focus. This "wave picture" predicts the same conservation laws as the "photon picture". However, it goes further as it also predicts correct yields and let envision new structuration schemes. These results are supported by theoretical calculations and experiments.

18:00 High Power 1 TW Ti:sapphire Laser at 1 kHz for High Energy High Harmonic Generation

We demonstrated 1 TW Ti:sapphire laser system at 1 kHz, which uses a cavity-mode-adjustable regenerative cavity as pre-amplifier for adjustable beam waist to match the beam mode in subsequent multi-pass amplifier. The compressed pulses with power of 25 mJ in 27.1 fs, which corresponds to 0.92 TW, were realized under the pump power of 108 W with cryogenically cooling. The result will pave a way to generation of high energy XUV attosecond source based on HHG at high repetition rate.

18:00 Nonperturbative Enhancement of Inelastic Photoemission Delay in Metals: Comparison with Correlated Insulators

Proposing a theoretical model enabling nonperturbative treatment of core-level photoemission of metallic systems, we could properly account for extrinsic plasmon losses and determine the corresponding photoemission delays. This is the first-time exploration of inelastic photoemission delays of higher order plasmon satellites beyond the lowest order and then gives a route to manipulate the photoemission delay especially in metallic nanostructures showing strong higher order plasmon sidebands. Finally, we compare the physics of photoemission delay in a metal with that of a correlated insulator CuCl$_2$. We indicate that the key difference between two systems should be in the extendedness of screening of the created hole. This finding guides to a new realm of attosecond electron dynamics of correlated electron systems.

18:00 Photon Gas in Plasma: Thermodynamics and Bose-Einstein Condensate

The thermodynamical properties of the photon-plasma system had been studied using statistical physics approach. It is demonstrated that the presence of the plasma medium enables the photon gas to undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation by adjusting the relevant parameters to criticality. Planck’s law of blackbody radiation is also modified with the appearance of a gap below the plasma frequency where a condensation peak of coherent radiation develops for the critical system.

10:45 Simulating Strong Field Rescattering Using Attosecond Light

An atom or molecule interacting with an intense, ultrafast laser pulse is a fundamental problem in modern physics. At intensities that are approximately one-tenth an atomic unit of field (50 V/A) the physics is well described by a semi-classical 3-step model where an electron tunnel ionizes, driven by the strong-field and then rescatters with its parent core. The consequence of this physics has opened the areas of attosecond science and spatial-temporal molecular imaging. However in a strong field experiment, the exponential rate of tunnel ionization fixes the release phase of the electron wave packet (EWP) at the extreme of the laser field. In this talk, we will describe a method that allows for more precise studies of the strong field process. The approach simulates the 3-step model by replacing the tunneling step with single-photon ionization by an attosecond XUV pulse. A phase-locked intense low-frequency field drives the EWP mimicking steps (2) and (3) but with little or no ionization. We will present both experimental and theoretical results demonstrating the viability of this approach.

10:00 Interferometric Attosecond Lock-in Measurement of Extreme Ultraviolet Circular Dichroism

We establish an extreme ultraviolet lock-in detection scheme, allowing the isolation and amplification of weak chiral signals, by achieving a direct time-domain polarization control. We demonstrate it by a phase-resolved measurement of magnetic circular dichroism.

We study the generation enhancement due to the spectral caustic in two-color HHG and show that the caustic feature can be used to provide a quasi-monochromatic XUV source with an almost linear frequency vs. time dependence.

12:15 Ultrafast Mapping of Coherenct Dynamics and Density Matrix Reconstruction in Terahertz-Assisted Laser Field

Using a phase-locked combination of XUV and terahertz fields to probe the dynamics of the system, we propose that the time-evolved density matrix can be reconstructed from photoelectronic spectra with the ultrafast coherent processes resolvable.
